Oh Fox News, how you do love to play into the fears and insecurities of your viewers. No network has done so much to blunt the minds of a nation as Roger Ailes’ operation that has been screaming for weeks about the idea that teachers and nurses might wish to be compensated fairly for the long hours they put in and the hard work that they do. It is a natural enmity, though. Teachers do, after all, try to inform the public, so Fox News would obviously see them as a threat to its own programming. It is such a violent threat that the mere mention of labor protests in the Middle East and Madison have cause Glenn Beck to warn us this is the sign of the coming Apocalypse! Seriously.
It is not difficult to find misinformation on Fox News. The general search technique involves checking to see whether lips are moving on the TV while the dial is set to Rupert Murdoch’s enterprise. Nor must one wait long for invective. Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity (all of whom but Bill O’Reilly flunked out of college) have all been decrying those “fat cat” teachers with their plump pension funds and their long hours for low pay. But most of all, they have been attacking the Wisconsin state employees unions.
All four, Beck, O’Reilly, Limbaugh and Hannity, are members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), a union that is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
So these blowhards have been frothing about unions and workers rights while enjoying all of the benefits of union membership themselves. It is amazing that anyone would be so willing to listen to these hypocrites.
